Family Farming at Penrose
The best view in Cornwall (lucky cows)
Penrose forms part of our family run dairy and arable farm situated on the South Coast of Cornwall around Loe Pool. Our family has been farming in the area since 1959 and currently manage around 1000 acres that spread from the coast across Porthleven and Helston.
We currently have 300 milking cows, the milk from which is supplied to Davidstow for Cathedral City cheese. Most of the feed for the cattle is produced on the farm including corn, maize and grass. Grass is cut for silage during May and July prior to opening for visitors in August and this will feed the cows over the winter. This makes the grass short and thick making it ideal for camping on!
It is often said that our cows have the best view in Cornwall and the view in question happens to be a field away from the campsite! Visitors can see our cattle all around the Penrose Estate enjoying the lush grass.

Walkers Crisps
We have also grown crisping potatoes on the farm for the last 40 years. Our potatoes are planted in the spring and harvested during July/August for Walkers Crisps. Our potatoes are harvested, graded and washed, then transported to the factory and are often in the crisp packet within 24 hours.
Regenerative practices at Penrose
We are passionate about farming our land in a sustainable and regenerative way and are very aware of the importance of farming in harmony with the environment. Penrose is a prime example of this. During the summer, whilst walking on the footpath through the estate, visitors can see an array of red, white and blue flowers in the potato field, these are from a regenerative mix of seeds given to us by Walkers Crisps. This is done to help reduce carbon, increase soil health and encourage wildlife in the area.
Natural manure from our herd of Holstein Friesian cows along with careful crop rotation ensures the soil is kept in good condition and pesticides are kept to a minimum. The fields adjoining Loe Pool are always kept in grass ensuring a barrier between the crops and the Pool and provides grass cover for a variety of birds and wildlife. There is an abundance of wildlife on the farm including several barn owls who take up residence in the barns near to the campsite.
